Why do we have a Synod?

Synod, as defined historically, is a gathering of the leaders of a Diocese, both ordained and lay, who prayerfully consider in God’s presence the important matters that are before the Church. In a Synod, one may expect to be inspired, encouraged, taught and trained for more effective ministry through the Church. The Synod of the Diocese of Western Anglicans consists of three parts convened by the Bishop and focused on the mission and ministry the Lord has entrusted to us. The four parts are: Clergy and Spouses Gathering, Clergy and Lay Leaders Gathering (Worship Service, Annual Report, Training and Governance) and Crozier Society Dinner. Our Synod is comprised of these elements in order to maximize Kingdom advancement and minimize travel burdens.

Synod Goals

  1. Equip people through teaching and skills development (workshops and intensives)

  2. Edify people:
+ by inspiration and information exchange (plenary talks and exhibitor tables)

+ through worship, vows renewal and preaching (opening Eucharist)

  3. Build relationships through fellowship and ministry partnership (mealtimes, cohorts)

  4. Develop deaneries as proto-dioceses through discussion and planning (small group breakouts)

  5. Govern the Diocese through canons, Executive Committee elections and budget affirmation (business meeting)

These goals combine to strengthen us by our unity and partnership in the Gospel.
